Cleveland Top 10 Creepiest Legends?

I was interviewed by John and the gang at Type 3 TV last night. In honor of Halloween, I hosted a poll on the site and presented the results of the top 10 creepiest legends in northern Ohio.

While there was initially some technical difficulties, the interview lasted about 90 minutes and covered the following legends:

Gray's Armory
South Bay Bessie
Squire's Castle
Rider's Inn
Witch's Ball
Helltown
Gore Orphanage
Mansfield State Reformatory
Franklin Castle
Melonheads

You can stream the entire show at the Type 3 TV website (it's in two parts, owing to the aformentioned technical difficulties), or you can grab my mp3 copy from here (Note: it's a 20.3M file) I want to thank John and the guys from Type 3 TV for having me on (again) and look forward to working with them in the future on some (possible) on-location haunts. Stay tuned, kids.

NOTE: It only took six years, but I finally got around to putting this interview on Youtube (with a static image of the ad for the show).  Easier than downloading (and mobile friendly!)

My First Visit to Squire's Castle

From the Creepy Cleveland Archives

Contributed by velvetniteskys

I havent been to Squires Castle often but I won't forget my very first visit! The inside wasn't as I expected.
I walked in and saw (briefly) I think what it was supposed to have been-it was furnished, had windows and decorations on the walls and I could hear "bustling" like quick activity that goes on as visitors are expected.
I saw a short bench covered in a deep blue with a candle table next to it with a vase and sunlit streaming thru the side window made a lovely warm welcome-Could feel the warmth in the place and lots of good feelings-sort of like expectations of excitement.
Thing of it was-it was a cold dark, dreary rainy Sept. morning and no one was out and about-not even walking the paths yet. I stood frozen until my friend spoke and it all cleared to what was actually there-nothing. And there was me whipping my head around wondering where it all went - looking rather silly I bet! But I told her stay where she was and went thru the rest of the place by myself-there were bits of impressions but nothing as vivid as that first entry.
I am no psychic - not skeptical of paranormal but no great believer either - too many frauds and too many too quick to believe ANYTHING just for the drama-but I have to believe what I see and experience myself. I believe that was to be a lovely place-or once was! I had heard it was brought from elsewhere-perhaps the things I experienced were from there-or I suddenly stepped into the dream of what it was hoped to be. I had never heard of the place until that day and it was only after talking about my experience to a neighbour that I was told parts of the story about the place.

Just a hoax

Here it is. I too am a resident of the area. I have been going to Squires Castle my whole life. nothing is strange about the castle no cold feelings as you enter it. As the relative stated above the wife never lived there or died there. At homecoming for the local high school my freshman year we took pics there. NO ORBS. I am not a skeptic though I do believe in the paranormal, ghosts, the whole bit. I just never experienced anything there. Except a boxing match which we did video tape inside the castle and nothing was caught on tape. This legend is a hoax. But who knows about the Cults in the 60's and 70's and the suicides they might be luriking around somewhere.

It's not Fergus

As a former employee of the Cleveland Metroparks, and the Ranger Department, I would have to say that anyone who believes that the stories of Fergus Squire and his beloved wife are untrue, is just being a little too naive. First off, Mr. Squire made building his castle a passion because he was drawn to that area, if you indeed wander up the hill behind the castle there are remnants of the observation tower from which Mr. Squire used to enjoy the spacious view over the valley area. However the story of his Wife's tragic death are very exaggerated, she was indeed the city girl and did not die in the basement.
However here's where the strange parts of this story start, there were indeed, strange people afoot in the 60s and 70s, Biker Gangs, Devil Worshipers, Animal Sacrifices, and there are quite a few suicides in that park every year, probably spawning the paranormal events that occur on occasion. I personally was present a few years back when the maintenance staff reopened the basement prior to refilling it with gravel and concrete, and one of the workers climbed to the top of the turret in order to cut out what turned out to be a small tree growing out of the concrete.
Another little known tidbit is the presence of cult types or "Druids" at the River Grove Reserved area (Just south of the Castle) at the summer and winter solstice. They have the area booked on those two days every year.
Now I've been through those woods at night, and even down some of those walking paths that go very far from the roadways, and I have experienced at times cold chills in the middle of summer an broad daylight, I've seen lights in the hills behind the castle that were too oblong to be man-made, bottom line, too many unexplained things occur in that park to assume that there is a strong presence there.

Not Haunted!

I just wanted to say anyone going to Squire's Castle looking for ghosts or orbs or whatever is probably wasting their time. Maybe the pics that I saw on the page were real, I don't know. But I do know that I have been going to the castle since I was a little kid(I'm 30 now), and I have never felt anything strange or unusual. I have hiked the woods behind the castle (on and off trail) and have never seen anything there either. I'm not a sceptic, I have been places that I wouldn't go to again because it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up, but Squire's Castle isn't one of them. I do know some people that have been married there, and I have great memories of playing tag with whatever kids were there when I was a kid. We would jump out the windows and all around, unfortunately they put bars up on most of the windows now :(

Orbs at Squire's

Ok, heres the whole deal with Squires Castle! I've been here for thirteen years and have heard every story out there about the former maids quarters. First, Mrs. Squire died an old lady of natural causes in her home in Willowick in the early 1900's, not in the basement of the castle. But I'm far from the one to tell you that there's no supernatural activity there, or in the Metroparks period. I have some pics that are clearly orbs. Keep in mind these few things while viewing these pics.

#1. Im a skeptic, I dont use 35 mm 400 speed film. I use a digital camera, no mistakes and no misprints, just high quality pictures.

#2. Supernatural "beings" or apparatus' feed on energy. I use really good batteries that last about two weeks, the ones that I had in died in two and a half hours of use, same batteries that usually last a week or two.

#3. I cleaned the lens before every shot, everytime.

#4. My cousin and I grew ill the moment we stepped up to the main entrance of the "castle" and felt like we had no buisiness being ther in the first place, so we left. We bumped into the park rangers on our mission and they confirmed my accusation that during the 60's and 70's devil worshiping and animal sacrifices were practiced there often.

Take it for what its worth, but look at the other pics in the squires castle category and make the connection, plus please keep in mind that this was a very clear night and there wasnt a snow flake or dust or rain anywhere in sight. This is the real thing..Im the one on the far right. Notice how clear the picture of us is?

Not so scary

Hi,
I've visited Squire's Castle many times, I even had my 16th birthday party there. I have to say there is nothing scary about it or the surrounding woods at all. I've hiked through those woods and spent a lot of time at the castle and I've never experienced anything out of the ordinary. In fact, I've never even heard any ghost stories about it before I visited this site. Anyway, the rest of the site is cool! I live in PA now but when I go home to visit I'll probably see some of those other places.

Squire's Castle Orb

This picture was taken at Squire's Castle on Friday, October 26th at about 9pm. I used my typical ghost-hunting camera, which is a Polaroid 35mm with Kodak 400 film. Out of about seven pictures taken at Squire's Castle, this is the only one that developed with a very dense, clear orb. Dr. Ken of the Ohio Ghost Hunters Society confirmed the anomaly for me. I was aware of all the stories and rumors that have been told over the years, but I never believed that Squire's Castle is haunted. Maybe now I the have proof to show that it most definitely is still home to Mrs. Squire!

Squire's Castle Debunked!

I read the link you have on your site about squires castle being haunted...well that's a bunch of bull! at least the story that is posted. I am related (that's what my great grandmother told me) to the squires that built the castle. Any way the guy and his wife never lived in the castle. That is why it was never completed. She was a city dweller like the story said, and refused to spend even one night in the castle. Remember at the time it was built it would have taken a extremely long time to get from there to Cleveland (the suburbs were non-existent) so the story about her dying there are 100% false!

Boy have I got a Squire's Castle story for you!

WEBMASTER NOTE: Melannie sent me a copy of the sound file. You can hear it yourself by checking out the link in the comments below the post.

Hi! Boy have I got a story for you! With proof! First I would like to say that I never got to surf the internet much til now. So, when I came across your site I got so excited I HAVE to tell you this story that happened in 1996! The TRUE story:

I'm 31 years old, and have lived in northeast Ohio my whole life. I practically grew up at Strawberry Lane, the duck pond with the animal building, and Squire's Castle. We used to play hide and seek in the Castle millions of times my whole life. Well, one night, in 1996, my friend and I were driving around the area at between 9-10 at night and I decided to take him to Squire's Castle and I told him that it was supposed to be haunted and so we were gonna go and see if it was true and maybe we'd catch a ghost. So we went to the store and bought flashlights and a tape recorder and blank tapes. We then went to the Castle and it early winter time, a warm night, hadn't snowed yet for the season, but all the fall leaves were gone from the ground. We were very scared walking up that pitch black path even with the flashlights. As we neared the castle 3 or 4 people were leaving and walking toward the parking lot. They were talking loudly. And we went in the castle and there was no one else in there. We went into the Library (which at the time I didn't know that, I didn't find out that that room was a library til many years later. Back then there were no signs on the wall about the castle and the windows didn't have bars on them.) and when we made sure we were totally alone, we heard the people talking out in the parking lot. I found a nook/cranny in the wall where it meets the floor (there are none nowadays in that room, they're all sealed up with cement) and pressed record on the tape recorder and made sure it worked, and then put it in the nook with the microphone facing out. We checked to make sure that you really couldn't see. Then we left. We were the only car in the parking lot when we were leaving, and we left for an hour and a half. Then we came back and retrieved the tape recorder. So, I have a tape recording. SCARY SHIT! I still have it today, and have played it for many friends of mine. Okay, now, things I gotta say about this tape: 1) After it was turned on, you can hear us talking about putting it somewhere. Then you can hear us putting it in the nook. Then you can hear us talking some more, then you can hear us walking away. There is a faint laugh in the beginning we think could possibly have been those people out in the parking lot when they were leaving, but we don't remember for sure. Then all of a sudden a different tone of empty air starts and a repetitious clicking starts. Then you hear a low deep moan. 2) Then you hear what sounds like leaves rustling around on the floor (there were none). Then years later, when I found out that room was a library I realized that sound wasn't leaves rustling, it must've been pages of a book!! 3) It was a tape that had 30 minutes length on a side (only used one side, of course, we weren't there to flip it over to the other side) and we were gone for an hour and a half, and it was still on and recording when we came back to get it, and it was only about 5 minutes into recording of tape length!!! 4) You can hear us putting the tape recorder down, walking away to leave, we left for an hour and a half, and when we came back you can hear us walking in and picking up the tape recorder, and all on the first less than 5 minutes of tape!!! 5) There is no way anyone could've come after we left and messed with it because you can hear if people walk in or out, and you can hear when the tape recorder is being picked up and put down, and it was all just us, so no one messed with it. 6) You can also hear a scream that just suddenly cuts in and sounds otherwordly, and there are parts in it like it's skipping at different speeds and there are other weird noises to that I can't explain.

Squire's Castle Dinner Party

I just recently stumbled upon the Creepy Cleveland website and started reading the Squires Castle Blogs. I have never posted anything before so here goes. I am 51 yrs old, when I was 19 (that would be 1975) my friends and I spent a lot of time hanging around the Castle. Weekend nights there was sometimes a guitar player, a fire and some smoking going on. People you just met became your friends. One night after midnight a buddy and myself were supposed to meet some people at the castle. Even thought the park was closed we used to park on a side street off river road and walk there. As we approached we saw no signs of anyone. No lights or glow of cigarette. We entered in the main doorway and as we were in the central hall we both heard and saw something that has made me the butt of quite a few jokes ever since. For over 30 yrs now no one really believes me. Sadly my friend was in a car accident soon after and received a severe blow to the head. He is now mentally handicapped and could not possibly verify the story. Well here goes. We were very mildly buzzed and in no way on anything. In the room to the right as we entered was a dinner party. There was a long table with maybe 8 to 10 people eating and laughing. We heard no noise until we entered the castle and then all the sudden there was a boisterous party. We stood what seemed like a long minute and no one looked toward us. We fled very fast. It was after midnight and that was not just some kids. Their dress and ages placed them from 30 to 70 years old. They looked out of place and yet as if they belonged. I have never wavered in this story but even my wife and kids think I am just making it up or I was higher then I let on.

Squire's Castle Photo

Hello,
I had just found your website while talking with family about Squires Castle.
I have lived in the Lake Co. area my whole life and have been going there since I was very small. I now take my kids there-
Each trip I am always taking pictures of the castle. Last year on Mother's Day, we took the kids to the park and I decided to start taking pictures with my children in different places of the castle to later put together in a frame all together. I have had that picture on the bookshelf and never really looked at it.
While on my computer looking at the 'ghost' in my house that I happened to catch on film we decided to look closer at all the pictures that I had taken at the castle to see if there was anything caught.
Well, upon looking at the umpteenth picture, we saw it! I have a picture of a shadow looking out of the castle towards my son. I know for a fact there was no one in the castle at the time I took the picture. I have had way to many pictures ruined because of some nut case making faces while I was snapping pictures-
Anyway I thought that you might find the picture as interesting as we all did. Look in the window on the left of the photo, under the 'stripes' - The next photo is a close up of that window.

I also wanted to tell you what a GREAT site you have put together! I found myself reading into the wee hours of the morning to all the information that you have.
Keep up the good work-

Squire's Castle

I moved to Lake County, OH in '94 from California. Moved back to California in '97...I can't wait to visit Squires again. There is definately something about it, something special. After loosing a best friend: Jason Michael Scarcelli in '97...me & a group of friends choose Squires to drink & smoke the night away and to mourn the loss of one of the greatest dudes we ever knew. I swear that night in the west wing of the castle, as we all stood silent in front of the fire....occasionally laughing & reminiscing about our pal, I know we all felt something special. Now I am not saying the castle is haunted, I am simply implying that I felt something. Whether it was my friend looking down on us from his cloud...or something else, what a feeling. That place is special to me, what I wouldn't give to be back there in '96 drinkin' one with some of the best friends I could have ever had. Keep her clean, & someone please take more photos!

Respectfully,
Danny Underwood '07

Rider's Inn / Squire's Castle

from: Chris Smith

By the way, Chuck, I was wondering if you were going to post anything on the Rider's Inn in Painesville. I know the ghost of "Mistress Suzanne" may not be the creepiest, but she sure is well known. The Inn itself is very interesting. Anyways, just curious. And what about Squire's Castle? Is there really an access hole to the basement? They say the basement is filled in, but I've heard the rumors of a "way" in. I've been there a million times and don't see how there could be. The trails behind the castle are winding and hilly and I've seen area's where people have "partied" or held ritual's. Probably just some stray teens being bored, but there could be anything below those grounds. Castle's are known for secret corridor's and hidden rooms. I know the story and how there was to be a much larger "main" castle to be built behind Squire's. But it's still a fun idea to imagine that there is something below the forest floor.
